Things I Like: Yukon Cornelius (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 1964)

Yukon Cornelius is one of the main characters of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Rankin/Bass. It is really hard to imagine the Christmas classic without this goofy man, full of bravado and testosterone. I do not think he was ever anybody’s favorite, but he definitely adds a certain charm to the story.

I assume he is an entirely original creation, as there had been Rudolph media before. But he appears when Rudolph and Hermey the elf try to find a new home. And he just kind of continues along with it.

His quest against his arch nemesis, the Abominable Snow Monster, was one for the ages. Then we see him and the monster fall off a cliff, and they are presumed dead.

But they luckily survived, as the Bumble, as he calls it, rebounds. And he subtly makes Bumble his pet, which is easier since they were able to remove its teeth. This is, however, rather disturbing to consider for the Bumble.

And Yukon is extremely happy when the Bumble places the Christmas star on the Christmas tree. But what I do not understand is why the tree did not already have a star? It was already Christmas Eve evening. You usually do that the day after Thanksgiving, do you not?
