Things (My Son) Likes: Sharkdog (TV Series)

My son is a bit weird when he chooses programs to watch. He will often become obsessed with a show, then suddenly move on to something different and make that his new obsession. Sharkdog became one of the shows he really enjoyed, especially around Halloween time. Despite Netflix battling Paramount over control of Warner Brothers, they actually collaborated on this show together through Nickelodeon.

The main character is Max Fisher, a young boy who lives on the coast. His dad works with sea life, and their whole surname is Fisher, so everything is very nautical.

Max accidentally gets himself a new pet, Sharkdog, who is half shark and half dog. I assume the mom is a shark and the dad is a very brave dog, but I try not to utterly rip my hair out over how absurd that concept is.

I do not watch his shows very intently, but a lot of the series focuses on Max trying to hide Sharkdog from other people. Apparently, his parents might hate the idea of a shark dog hybrid creature as a pet, and the normal people in town try to treat Sharkdog like Frankenstein’s monster.

The show is also not very educational. There is not much real value in him watching it, and if it teaches anything, it is probably the value of friendship. That is good, but as a parent, you kind of hope they would teach a little more than that. Still, I know I watched some truly awful cartoons back in the day, so I am not going to complain too much. I was just a little sad when my son Alexander ended his Sharkdog obsession, because he really loved it while it lasted.
