Things I Like: Chato Santana/El Diablo (DCEU)

Chato Santana, better known as El Diablo, is a DC Comics supervillain I wasn’t familiar with before seeing Suicide Squad. In the film, he was completely new to me. The DC Extended Universe portrays him more as an antihero than a true villain.

If I remember correctly, he was a Hispanic gang member who gained the power to control fire. During an episode fueled by anger, he accidentally killed his entire family.

This tragedy leads him to vow never to use his powers again, which is ironic considering he agrees to go on a dangerous mission. Strangely, he bonds with the team and begins to see them as another kind of family.

When push comes to shove, though, he does use his fire powers. Even heroes have crossed lines before; I think even Batman has used a gun at one point. Not in the DCEU, should I say.

In the end, El Diablo makes a brave sacrifice by taking on the Enchantress’s demonic brother. He’s even given the chance to reconsider, encouraged by Rick Flag, but he chooses to stay and perish, saving everyone else. Given his guilt and regret, that decision makes sense for his character.
