Things I Like: Stamp Guy (Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom)

Stamp Guy is a completely original character in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Still, I would not be surprised if the developers were at least a little inspired by Tingle from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Thankfully, Stamp Guy is not dressed quite as bizarrely as that wannabe green fairy.

Echoes of Wisdom is not the biggest Zelda game ever made, but for a 2D Zelda it still has a lot of land to explore. All across Hyrule you can find small stamp markers scattered around the map. Some are easy to spot, while others are much harder to find.

Whenever you interact with one of these markers, Stamp Guy suddenly parachutes down out of nowhere. It almost feels like he has been watching the whole time with nothing better to do. Everyone needs a hobby, I guess, but this guy might need therapy.

He gives you a stamp book, which you gradually upgrade as you collect more stamps. The first rewards are pretty minor, but they get better as you progress. The tricky part is that you can find these stamps almost anywhere. If you want to collect them all without looking things up online, it can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, you do not actually need to find every single one to get the most useful rewards.

The best reward I received was a Fairy Bottle. Apparently, if you keep going you can also earn some monster stones, and the ultimate reward is a costume that Princess Zelda can wear. None of these rewards are really essential to finishing the game, so you could skip the entire stamp hunt if you wanted. Since the final reward is just a costume that basically copies Stamp Guy’s outfit, I am actually glad I did not spend the extra time tracking down every last stamp. His look is many things, but fashionable is definitely not one of them.
