Tri is another major character in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. He is a cute little creature, though his magical species is apparently called “Tris,” so he technically does not have a unique name. He also reminded me a bit of Star from the Disney movie Wish, which makes me wonder if that was intentional or just a coincidence.

Tri is the last of his kind who has not been captured by dark magic. He finds Princess Zelda while she is imprisoned in Hyrule Castle by the evil Echo clones of her father and his ministers. He gives her the Tri Rod, which becomes the main tool you use for most of the game.

It quickly becomes clear that Tri and Princess Zelda have a dynamic similar to Link and Navi in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, although thankfully Tri does not constantly shout “Hey! Listen!” every few seconds.

For most of the game, you travel across Hyrule searching for corrupted rifts in the land. By entering these rifts, you eventually find and free Tri’s companions, which restores each region.

Later, it is revealed that Tri and the others are servants of the goddesses Din, Farore, and Nayru. Tri’s name is also an obvious reference to the Triforce. The main villain, Null, wants to oppose the goddesses and return existence itself to nothing but darkness and chaos.

Like Navi at the end of Ocarina of Time, Tri eventually has to say goodbye. Thankfully, this farewell actually feels complete and makes sense. Many players were frustrated when Navi disappeared at the end of Ocarina of Time, and even more disappointed when that storyline was never fully resolved in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. If this game ever receives a direct sequel, though, I would not be surprised if Tri somehow finds his way back to his princess friend.
