Rampage World Tour was released in 1997 as a sequel to the original 1986 Rampage. It continues the same concept of giant monsters destroying cities, but expands the setting into a worldwide tour of destruction.
The game was developed by Game Refuge and published by Midway Games, a major arcade publisher known for bringing fast-paced, accessible games to a wide audience.
Although it began as an arcade title, the game was later released on multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, Game Boy Color, and Windows, making it widely accessible beyond arcades.
The plot involves a corrupt company called Scumlabs whose experiment goes wrong and creates three giant monsters named George, Lizzie, and Ralph. They then set out to destroy the company’s facilities around the world.
Instead of saving cities, players are tasked with destroying every building in each level while dealing with military forces such as tanks and helicopters that try to stop them.
If players take too long to destroy a city, jets arrive and bomb the remaining buildings, which ends the stage early and results in a lower score.
A notable gameplay feature is the ability to influence travel routes by destroying billboards or collecting “World Tour” power-ups, which determine the next region the player visits.
The game includes a temporary mutation where contact with purple radioactive waste transforms the character into a stronger form known as V.E.R.N., increasing their destructive power.
The arcade version allows up to three players to play at the same time, encouraging cooperative gameplay and adding to the chaotic experience.
Although early information suggested the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions would support three players, both versions were released with only two-player support.
The Nintendo 64 version includes full three-player functionality, making it closer to the original arcade experience in terms of multiplayer.
Near the end of the game, Scumlabs CEO Eustace DeMonic transforms himself into a monster and fights the player on a lunar base.
