Things I Like: Deke (2 Broke Girls)

Played by Eric Andre, Deke is one of the more notable characters on the television series 2 Broke Girls, even though his run on the show was fairly short. Eric Andre is a very funny guy, and he definitely brought some solid laughs to the series, but as a major love interest for Max, he was one of my lesser favorites.

Personality-wise, they kind of matched in an odd way since they were both pretty unconventional. For example, Deke lived in a dumpster, which sounds terrible at first until you learn he converted a clean dumpster into a small living space. It sounds wild on paper, but with rent in New York City being higher than a mortgage in many other parts of the United States, the idea starts to feel slightly less absurd in hindsight.

He was also one of Max’s classmates at the cooking school run by the creepy yet suave French chef. Sooner rather than later, they start dating, but the romantic chemistry always felt a bit off, to say the least.

The big surprise was that Deke was not actually a struggling working-class guy with creative survival skills. He turned out to be a privileged rich kid with a wealthy family. Even though Max and Caroline spend most of the series trying to get ahead financially, this reveal felt like a bit of a twist in his character. Some people pretend to be rich, but it is much less common for rich people to consistently present themselves as poor.

Soon enough, they break up. It did not take long after meeting his family for the relationship to fizzle out. That is a bit of a shame in hindsight, but he never really felt like long-term partner material for Max, despite the financial security his family wealth could have provided.
