Things I Like: Sophie Kachinsky (2 Broke Girls)

Sophie Kachinsky is one of the more notable characters on the television sitcom 2 Broke Girls. Played by Jennifer Coolidge, I initially assumed she was going to be a one-time guest appearance, but she wound up becoming a series regular after showing up sometime during the first season. She clearly connected with audiences and the recurring role likely gave her career a meaningful boost in popularity.

Her character is a Polish woman who moves into the same apartment complex as the girls. Max and Caroline do not exactly hit it off with her at first, and the relationship comes close to turning into an outright moment of hatred.

That tension eventually fades and gets left behind. We learn she runs some kind of cleaning business, and despite living in the same modest apartment complex as the girls, she is in considerably better financial shape than either of them.

The relationship that develops between her and Oleg, the Ukrainian line cook, caught me off guard. He is obviously quite a bit younger than her, and the pairing makes the most sense when you consider that they both come from Slavic backgrounds and share a similar cultural frame of reference. It was not the most compelling romance the show produced, but it was far from the worst either.

What makes it even stranger is that they end up having a baby naturally despite her being well past the age of ideal biological motherhood. That said, as the series progresses, I think her character starts to run on fumes a bit. The smugness and vanity that define her can become a little much, and I found myself less charmed by her than a lot of other fans of the show seem to be.
