Mael is one of the archangels and my favorite among the four. We originally hear he was killed by Estarossa of the Ten Commandments during the original holy war.

In truth, he was really Estarossa all along. The original Gowther knew by “killing” him with a curse, it would end the original holy war. And Gowther the doll was crucial in breaking the curse on him.

I related a lot to him due to his painful childhood. Before becoming the most powerful archangel, he was mocked by his own kind for his kindness and pacifism. The only people who treated him with respect were Elizabeth and his brother Ludociel.

He makes mistakes after been freed from the curse as he had several commandments still in his body. Becoming so outrageously powerful that he’s nearly unstoppable, it was only due to King getting a huge power boost that he was able to be defeated on the physical level.

Gowther the doll was the one who saved him mentally from his own destruction. He becomes free from the Commandments and even borrows Sunshine from Escanor, as he was the original holder of the grace.

While he does prefer the path of peace, he kicked major butt while using Sunshine. Using techniques that Escanor either did not know or was unable to use.

He saved the life of Escanor twice and gives him back Sunshine when the Demon King takes the body of Zeldris.

After Escanor’s death, he gets Sunshine back. In the movie Cursed by Light, he doesn’t do whole lot which was disappointing. He somehow gets beat up by members of the Goddess race who were controlled by a vengeful Supreme Deity.
