There are several stories behind the title of Final Fantasy. The most popular ones are that it was intended to be the final project for Squaresoft or the final game before the designer’s retirement. But it seems that the true meaning is they wanted to call it Fighting Fantasy and the name was taken.
There are so many different names taken for things already that I’m sure finding a name that isn’t already taken is going to get harder and harder.
