I’m a pretty big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I always intend to watch every single show and movie that Disney churns out. Whether it’s for the silver screen or Disney+ on my television. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Ms. Marvel, as I’m not familiar with the character.
The show is about Kamala Khan, a young Muslim girl with parents from Pakistan. She lives a normal life in Jersey City, but she definitely has a passion for superheroes.
She is absolutely obsessed with Carol Danvers, who is better known as Captain Marvel. One of the things she really wants to do is win a costume contest as her superhero favorite at an Avengers fan convention.
But she finds a bangle that belongs to her family and she discovers it gives her magical powers. While her abilities are different in execution and origin than Captain Marvel, it doesn’t take long for anyone to notice that there’s a new superhero on the scene.
I will say the series does really well at representing Pakistani and Muslim culture. Along with telling the history of how Pakistan became a country when it separated from British India.
But I was a little disappointed in the whole superhero part of the show. Her powers are kind of weak and I kind of wonder how that’s going to be represented in the new upcoming movie called The Marvels. It also has an imbalance on who the central villain is and it feels like the plot kind of wanders in importance. I do like the show but it’s definitely one of the weaker Disney+ original shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
