I would never say I was the biggest Addams Family fan, but I do enjoy their stories. I think the ones that are most special to me are the 1990s movies. But it’s been a long time since I’ve seen any of them. I was cautiously optimistic about Wednesday on Netflix but I wasn’t too surprised to hear how good it was.

The story primarily focuses on (obviously) Wednesday Addams. She gets expelled from an normie school and her parents get her signed up for a school of outcasts called Nevermore. Around the school however, a giant monster has been killing innocent people brutally. And Wednesday soon learns how much dark history has been buried by the people running the show.

One of the best parts about the new Wednesday show is her roommate, Enid Sinclair. She’s technically the exact opposite of Wednesday, but yet they feel like two sides of the same coin.

And I was surprised how much I was a fan of Thing in the show. He definitely was given his opportunity to shine and he did.

Jenna Ortega absolutely nails it as Wednesday Addams. She’s just as good if not better than Christina Ricci and I never thought I would say that. I will say they did miscast her parents a little. Catherine Zeta-Jones is okay as Morticia but Luis Guzman (while accurate to the original comics) just isn’t a good fit for Gomez. Raul Julia absolutely defined that role and Guzman suffers in his shadow. Plus the two of them really don’t have much chemistry on screen, which is the two character’s main dynamic.

Ironically I would say Pugsley Addams was actually casted pretty well. He actually (for once) looks like he’s the son of Gomez and Morticia. In all other incarnations, he always seems like they gave life to Ralph Wiggum from The Simpsons.

I did like the new Uncle Fester, but not as much as I liked Christopher Lloyd as the eccentric uncle.

I was delighted to see Christina Ricci actually show up for the series. She portrays a character in a much less notable role, but I thought it was cool she was a part of the new season. My wife really didn’t recognize her with the glasses and the red hair. But I had seen a cast photo talking about her before watching it.

Netflix has made a lot of stupid decisions lately and they’ve been missing more than they’ve been making hits. However, Wednesday is the exception to that. It is a very bingeable and likable show. My wife and I watched it in only 2 days time and we usually take our time with TV seasons. I am definitely looking forward to season 2, whenever that gets made.
I have heard so many good things about this one. I don’t think Season 2 will be out until the end of next year though. Such a long time to wait!
