The Niʻihau incident occurred after the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. A Japanese military pilot was told that the island was uninhabited and should his plane be damaged, he should wait there for rescue. The island was not uninhabited and some locals had found him. Originally being treated like a guest, the tables turned on him when they realized what happened earlier that day in Hawaii. Some locals were sympathetic to him and try to help him escape but he was killed.
