Things I Like: The Witcher (TV Series) Season 3

Back when we were first dating, my wife introduced me to The Witcher. It hasn’t been my favorite thing to come out of Netflix but it’s definitely in the top 10. Virtually all fans were shocked and disappointed to learn that Henry Cavill would not be returning for season 4. So even if this was the best season ever (it’s not) it was going to be bittersweet.

Most of the season revolves around Geralt of Rivia and Princess Ciri. Her real father (Emperor Emhyr var Emreis) is hunting her along with virtually everybody else that doesn’t care for her. And her “adoptive” “father” Geralt is trying his best to train her to defend herself.

While Yennefer of Vengerberg is training Ciri on how to use her magic. Ciri will have to battle monsters, magicians, and regular soldiers in order to stay alive.

I still don’t quite know why anybody takes the evil emperor guy (Emperor Emhyr var Emreis) seriously yet. He doesn’t seem to have the magical or physical power, just the throne. I don’t think they’ve said it in season 3, but according to the books he wants his daughter back into his care because her child is prophesized to rule the world. So he wants to marry her and and impregnate his daughter, so he can be that child’s father too or something like that. Pretty bizarre.

One of the most confusing things about the whole season was the politics of the mages. Their brotherhood’s alliances and suspicions go from straightforwardly understandable to completely chaotic at the snap of a finger.

I will say Yennefer was a lot stronger this season than the previous. And it seems that her role in season 4 will probably be even better.

It’s a shame that this is her last season with Henry Cavill. They had really good chemistry together but we’ll see if that holds true when Liam Hemsworth takes over the role.

Jaskier wasn’t as funny nor were his songs as cool this season but I was glad to see him back. Not to spoil anything, but there was something that confirmed a detail that was a little obvious about his romantic life that we haven’t seen in the previous season.

I will say one of the best parts about season 3 is Ciri finally becoming a warrior and a powerful mage. She’s got a lot to learn, but she’s definitely not this pathetic damsel of a princess that we originally saw.

I will say that season 3 is definitely the worst season of The Witcher but I still had a lot of fun watching it. I have not read the Polish books that the series is based on but Henry Cavill exited the show (allegedly) on its spinning away from its source material. I have read that a lot of fans of the books felt the same way so I can at least understand why Henry Cavill is leaving. Netflix producers/writers are very arrogant when it comes to The Witcher. Yeah, sometimes fans don’t know what they want, but both the fan base and Henry Cavill are right. The Witcher has become quite a golden goose for Netflix and I’m sure all of their competitors are laughing when they’re very close to killing its prized possession, for no valid reason at all.

The consensus is that season 1 was good, then it all went downhill. I think that’s why Henry is leaving. Doesn’t want to be a part of the crap show anymore. I haven’t watched any due to the bad reviews this one got after season 1. Probably won’t watch it with a Hemsworth leading the cast either.
