Sonic Colors: Ultimate is technically an enhanced re-release of a Nintendo Wii game from 2010. I had heard mixed things about it, but it did pop up on sale awhile ago on the Nintendo Switch’s eshop store. But I soon came to realize that this was a very disappointing adventure.

There’s nothing super unique about the game either. Sonic and Tails walk themselves into another trap of a journey. This time into some kind of futuristic space amusement park.

And of course, the main problem behind what’s going on is Dr. Eggman. He pretends that he turned over a new leaf and built this amusement place as an atonement for his sins.

But he’s apparently hunting a bunch of weird alien creatures, some of which befriend Sonic and Tails. Eventually they get to bond with Sonic and give him special powers which are all kind of confusing and aren’t as cool as advertised.

Like a lot of recent modern Sonic games, Sonic Colors mixes a bunch of levels with 3D parts and 2D parts. The 3D sections are fairly okay but they’re not super memorable.

The 2D levels are what is the major flaw of the game. They feel nothing like the classic Sonic games and they control like complete garbage.

The boss battles don’t save it either. They’re mediocre and forgetable. Even though AI created things wasn’t something back in 2010, Sega made this game feel like they typed some words in and this game popped out of a generator.

It’s funny how much Sega has fallen since the 1990s. Sonic games actually used to mean something. They used to be just as big as when Mario had a new game. Now most fans see a Sonic game and typically expect the worst. Sonic Colors: Ultimate is not as bad as Sonic 06 but I thought it was worse than Sonic Forces, which wasn’t great on its own.
