Turok 1 was a Nintendo 64 exclusive for a brief period, as a PC version for Microsoft Windows was released later that same year.
Turok 1 is not an original concept, as the video game is based on a comic book series by Valiant Comics. The franchise itself was originally created by Western Publishing and Dell Comics in 1954, and later revived by Valiant.
Turok 1 was also the very first first-person shooter (FPS) released for the Nintendo 64 console.
The game was developed by a small team of about 15 people. Although Nintendo supported the project, Iguana Entertainment had to produce all of its development tools in-house. They also faced challenges fitting all of the game’s content onto an 8-megabyte cartridge.
Turok was almost designed as a third-person shooter instead of an FPS.
The developers were initially concerned that the game’s violence would lead to censorship from Nintendo, but Nintendo never asked to see or approve any part of the game.
Turok was not just a hopeful project—it was a last-ditch effort by Acclaim to turn around their financial troubles. At the time, their stock had fallen to around $3, down from a previous high of $13.87.
When Turok 1 was released in Japan, it was renamed Dimensional Warrior Turok.
The German version of Turok 1 was heavily censored, with all human enemies replaced by robots.
Turok 1 remains fairly popular with speedrunners, some of whom can complete the game in about 30 minutes.
