Things I Like: 2 Broke Girls (TV Series)

I vaguely remember when 2 Broke Girls premiered during the 2010’s. At that time, I was pretty into streaming and didn’t have cable, so while other people were enjoying it on CBS, I really had no realistic way to watch it—as far as I knew. It also never seemed to be on any of the streaming services I had access to. But I’ve recently been a fairly big fan of Kat Dennings, so I eventually Googled how to watch 2 Broke Girls, and sure enough, its current home is The Roku Channel—which I never would have expected.

The legacy of 2 Broke Girls is highly controversial. Some people love the sitcom, while others absolutely hate it. I think a major reason for that is the fact that Max Black basically carries the entire show.

She’s beautiful, busty, funny, has a great personality, and delivers the best jokes. Her being a working-class woman who usually has very little money on her makes sense with her backstory.

The other main character is Caroline Channing, who recently lost all her family’s money because her father was a Ponzi schemer who just went to prison. She goes from living in penthouses to basically being homeless for a little while—which raises the question of why she didn’t try to get a job using her college degree, considering her dad paid for her to attend a very prestigious school.

Max and Caroline follow a classic “Odd Couple” formula. In many ways, they couldn’t be more different, but they complement each other in that yin-and-yang kind of way. That said, Caroline has so many cringey moments, it’s honestly ridiculous—LOL.

The other characters could have been developed better, especially at first; they often seemed more one-dimensional than like real people. Han Lee is so pathetic that you often feel sorry for him, despite the fact that he can be kind of a little jerk.

The diner cook, Oleg, is one of the most disturbing individuals you’ll ever see on television. But strangely, he does grow on you. I had no idea his actor was actually American, not Ukrainian, and hearing his real voice now feels a bit surreal.

Jennifer Coolidge as Sophie 2 Broke Girls TV Series Warner Bros

Apparently, Jennifer Coolidge wasn’t meant to be a permanent character on the show. Her character, Zofia “Sophie” Kaczyński, became a big hit with audiences. But honestly, during the later half of the series, I thought she got rather dull. They had played every trick with that pony of a character, and at one point, I wished they had written her off the show.

One of my biggest problems with Two Broke Girls is how hard Max and Caroline struggle, despite having some fairly successful business ventures. A lot of the series focuses on them trying to get ahead, but long-term, it feels more like watching tires spin in the mud. And with their rent being around $950 for both of them, how on Earth did they stay that poor while working as waitresses and running their side businesses?

It’s far from the perfect sitcom, and I’ll never claim otherwise. CBS apparently canceled it after a steady decline, and you can definitely tell when the quality dips. I would never put it in my top ten sitcoms, but I was still a bit sad when it ended, especially since the finale was really anticlimactic. But my wife? She was absolutely devastated when the final episode finished on our 4K TV.
