Successful TV spin-offs are rare, but the creators hit it out of the park with Young Sheldon—a fantastic sitcom connected to The Big Bang Theory that still managed to stand on its own. Given that success, it wasn’t surprising when CBS and Warner Bros. decided to try another spin-off: Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage. This show likely only happened because Emily Osment’s portrayal of Mandy made the character so compelling during the later seasons of Young Sheldon.

The series picks up not long after the events of Young Sheldon, with George Cooper Sr. having recently passed away. Instead of living with his mother, Georgie moves in with Mandy’s parents, setting the stage for a fresh dynamic.

This time, Georgie works at his father-in-law’s tire shop—a far cry from where we see him end up in The Big Bang Theory, offering fans some intriguing foreshadowing.

One of the best parts of Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage is Jim McAllister, Mandy’s father, played by the incredibly talented Will Sasso. He’s just as likable here as he was in Young Sheldon.

Mandy’s mother, Audrey McAllister, is also worth mentioning. She’s less of a “biatch” (to put it bluntly) in this series. While she still has her moments, she’s more of the mother-in-law Georgie needs—and when she’s not, at least she makes for a good-ish grandmother.

The first season aired over a fairly long stretch, so it took some time to get through, but I’ve enjoyed it so far. That said, the show still needs some polish. Despite featuring most of the same cast from Young Sheldon (minus Iain Armitage, since Sheldon is out of state), it has a noticeably different tone and style. Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on personal taste, but it’s not a dealbreaker. With a second season confirmed, there’s hope that Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage will find its footing and run for a probable solid five or six seasons before wrapping up.
