Andross is the final boss of Star Fox Adventures, just as he is in nearly every Star Fox game I’ve ever played and probably the ones I haven’t, too. He’s not a bad boss in the game, but he feels rather unnecessary. He was supposedly killed in Star Fox 64, and while I’m used to Bowser and Ganondorf returning for no apparent reason, they really could have given General Scales the spotlight he was clearly meant to have before Nintendo asked Rare to turn Dinosaur Planet into a Star Fox game.

He cleverly hides during most of the game, waiting for Fox to gather everything needed to accidentally resurrect his nemesis. It’s very similar to how Ganondorf tricked Link into opening the Temple of Time in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It must feel pretty frustrating for Fox to be played like a fool, and for the player it’s a bit insulting to realize all that effort only led to undoing the hero’s progress.

And yes, the fight turns into an Arwing battle, just like every other encounter with Andross in previous and later games. His monkey-like form is even more obvious this time around.

He’s not a particularly difficult final boss, either. If I remember correctly, the N64 version in Star Fox 64 was actually a much tougher fight.

In the end, you send his giant monkey head back into oblivion. Until… the next Star Fox game, of course.
