Tomba! was developed by Whoopee Camp, a small studio founded by Tokuro Fujiwara, the creator of Ghosts ‘n Goblins and producer of Mega Man. The game was released in 1998 for the PlayStation 1.

Tomba! features 2D gameplay set within a 3D environment, a style known as 2.5D.

It was one of the first PS1 titles to combine platforming with open-world exploration and quest tracking.

The soundtrack was composed by Harumi Fujita, who also worked on Mega Man 3.

The game was localized by Sony Computer Entertainment America rather than Whoopee Camp.

Despite receiving positive reviews, it sold poorly due to limited marketing.

The game’s Japanese title is Tombi! (トンバ!), which means “wild boy.” The Italian version also uses “Tombi!” instead of “Tomba!” since “tomba” in Italian translates to “grave” or “tomb.”

Early concept art depicted Tomba with green hair instead of pink. The final color was chosen to make Tomba stand out.

A popular fan theory states that the designs of the pig bosses were inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins.

Fujiwara confirmed in an interview that the Evil Pigs symbolize greed and corruption.

Only one of the Evil Pigs in the game is female, and no, it’s not the Pink Pig. It’s actually the Navy Blue one.

Tomba! later became a collector’s item, often selling for over $200 USD in used condition.
