Our Flight Home from New Orleans With American Airlines

During our flight home, we flew with American Airlines, which isn’t something I’ve done since 2021 during our direct flight from GSP to Miami. My wife wasn’t photogenic this day, so we didn’t take a group photo. I was pleased with our New Orleans-to-DFW flight as we were on a decently sized Boeing 737, if I’m not mistaken. I actually got over my fear of flying, as I had no bad nerves at all during this flight.

Now the bad thing about American Airlines is that they don’t believe in TVs on the back of your seats like Delta does. I knew this and brought a tablet. I also have zero faith in airplane WiFi (which American charges for, or puts under a strange time limit with ads), so I downloaded a lot of movies and TV shows just to be certain. Luckily, this flight had a little holder, so it was comfortable. I thought it was odd when the airline attendant told me to take it off during descent. The grip of it is pretty tight, and it seems like it’d be better to leave it there.

Now the bad part. When we got to Dallas, the wheelchair people treated my wife like she didn’t matter at all. I’m not sure if this was an American Airlines problem or the third party that runs the wheelchair service. Then we got on a much smaller plane (Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet Aircraft) but being on Boeings for my last five flights really spoiled me. This one felt like a sardine can in comparison, and there was no tablet holder on the back of the seat.

But my wife let me have the window so she could easily access the bathroom if needed. During my first flight almost ten years ago, I turned it down because I was terrified to look, and with every flight it got easier. I got some good views on our last few flights, but the window seat is like an entirely different world. I could almost be entertained by the gorgeous views of our little blue marble alone. Though I did have to close the window eventually so my wife could nap.

But the view above all the clouds really cannot be beat. Now I want to fly again. I almost wish I could be an amateur pilot, but I don’t trust small-engine planes (less regulation and more accidents), and my lazy eye kills that dream. But to backtrack, our American Airlines flight experience was overall okay. Delta is by far the better airline in my opinion. My first was with United, and while I don’t remember it well, I still had a better time with Delta.

  2. So happy for you that flying is not a problem anymore. I’ve found over the years that, of the airlines mentioned, I greatly prefer Delta. Used to fly United all the time more than 20 years ago, but they went downhill. Don’t know what they’re like how, but haven’t had any reason to use them again. Now it’s the international airlines I have to contend with. Delta used to be great for non-stops from Málaga to JFK, but their prices have gone through the roof.

I prefer the window seat but it’s because I get sick on planes easily and this way I can rest my head against the wall. But the views are a nice bonus getting the window seat too.
