Brave Fencer Musashi was released in Japan on July 16, 1998, and in North America on October 31, 1998. Developed by Square. It sold over 400,000 copies worldwide, becoming a quiet cult hit.

It was directed by Yoichi Yoshimoto, previously known for work on Final Fantasy Tactics.

The game was created to serve as an action-RPG alternative to Square’s turn-based Final Fantasy titles.

The game’s world, Allucaneet Kingdom, is a pun on “all you can eat.” The antagonist nation, Thirstquencher Empire, is another food and drink pun. Many bosses and areas are named after beverages, sodas, or foods.

The original working title was simply “Musashi Project.”

Musashi is based on the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi, but reimagined in a comedic and chibi-styled form.

Musashi grows stronger by actively using sword techniques, not by leveling alone.

Musashi can become fatigued and fall asleep, making time management an important mechanic.
