Things I Like: The Abominable Snow Monster/Bumble (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 1964)

The Abominable Snow Monster/Bumble in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 1964 Christmas special Rankin/Bass

The Abominable Snow Monster is one of the most notable characters in the Rankin/Bass classic Christmas special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. While on paper he is the main villain of the story, I would argue that Santa is technically the real antagonist, but that is a topic for another blog post.

For the majority of the story, he is essentially a wild predator. He searches for potential victims, so I presume his intention was to eat them. It is difficult to blame him, as I doubt there is a Yeti McDonald’s anywhere near the North Pole.

He manages to capture Rudolph and his family, but thanks to Yukon Cornelius and Hermey the elf, they somehow manage to pull all of his teeth, which leaves him toothless.

Despite the Abominable Snow Monster presumably having immense strength, Yukon declares him harmless without his teeth. Then, in a bizarre display of bravado, both of them go off a cliff.

Nevertheless, both of them survive, and Yukon calls him Bumble. He is given the job of placing the star on the Christmas tree at the North Pole, even though it is Christmas Eve and this task should have already been completed. However, he is such a great character that I will not criticize the fact that he has only one job that an elf and a ladder could replace.
