Things I Like: Bubbles (Dragon Ball Z)

Bubbles in Dragon Ball Z anime Saiyan Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

Bubbles is a very minor character in the Dragon Ball Z anime, but one that I generally like. He is a monkey who lives on King Kai’s planet, which raises an interesting question: what makes him special enough to live in a world reserved for the divine? That is a bit of a plot hole on Akira Toriyama’s part.

He does not serve a major role in the story, mostly acting as a training test for Goku after the Saiyan initially mistakes him for King Kai. The test is simple: catch the diabolical monkey. This proves far more difficult than it sounds due to the intense gravity on King Kai’s planet.

Eventually, Goku succeeds, and it feels like a memorable and rewarding moment. Of course, he then has to face a much tougher challenge with Gregory, the flying cricket.

After that, Bubbles is largely reduced to a background character, especially after the Namek Saga when all the Z warriors leave. He is still with King Kai and Gregory when Goku brings Cell to the planet as the bio-android is about to explode, resulting in everyone being blown up. The poor monkey did not deserve that.
