The Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series is one that my wife and I have enjoyed, though not without its faults. One issue is how it follows the trend of many modern TV shows with huge budgets by releasing seasons every 2 years instead of annually. That is a big mistake, especially since Percy Jackson is similar to Harry Potter, where every year is a new adventure. Eventually, these kids are going to start looking old.

The second season is obviously based on the second book, The Sea of Monsters. After the events of the first season, Annabeth Chase eventually meets back up with Percy Jackson, and life with the Greek gods, demigods, and monsters begins again. None of this should surprise Percy, considering that his evil grandfather, Kronos, sent him a disturbing message at the end of the last season.

Camp Half-Blood feels much less special this time around. The leadership running the camp is questionable at best, and as the season continues, it becomes clear that this place is no longer the safe haven it once was.

Clarisse La Rue, the demigod daughter of Ares, becomes a major character. In many ways, she is a better warrior and demigod than Percy Jackson. While they should be natural allies, she presents herself far more antagonistically than she probably should.

Luke Castellan is still around, and no one seems able to truly stop him, and Zeus doesn’t seem bothered enough to do it himself. The half-human son of Hermes is determined to revive Kronos using the Golden Fleece. Percy and his friends must go out of their way to stop him.

To be honest, the second season is not quite as good as the first. It did not flop as badly as the second movie compared to the first, but I think the problem might be the source material. If you ask most fans of the books, The Sea of Monsters is often ranked at the bottom, even by people who still liked it. The season also feels a little too long, but it is fairly faithful to the book, so I will give it a pass there. While it did not blow me away, my wife and I will definitely watch the third season, which will be based on the third book, The Titan’s Curse. Since that story never got a movie in the 2010s, it will feel like fresh, uncharted territory for me.
