WipeOut 64 was released in 1998 exclusively for the Nintendo 64, making it the only WipeOut game to appear on a Nintendo console.

Unlike earlier WipeOut titles, it ran at a rock solid 60 frames per second, which was a huge achievement on the N64. It also supported analog steering, giving players more precise control.

The game was developed by Psygnosis, the same studio behind the original WipeOut on PlayStation.

Because the N64 used cartridges instead of CDs, WipeOut 64 could not include licensed CD music. Instead, it featured an original soundtrack that leaned heavily into late 90s techno and electronic styles, perfectly matching the futuristic aesthetic.

The game included 12 racing tracks, many of which were completely new rather than ports. Several tracks featured multiple elevation layers, making them feel more three dimensional than earlier entries.

Ships had noticeable weight differences, making team selection matter more than in previous games.

WipeOut 64 also did not include FMV cutscenes due to cartridge space limitations. Despite this, its in game visuals were cleaner and sharper than many of the PlayStation WipeOut titles.
