Things I Like: Reger Tokabi (Metroid Prime 4: Beyond)

Corporal Reger Tokabi is one of your most notable ally characters in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. He was not my favorite member of the supporting cast, but he still made a decent impression. My biggest complaint is that he simply did not get enough screen time, either in the cutscenes or during the actual gameplay.

You first encounter him on the snow-covered planet, and it happens in a pretty cool way. Samus gets caught in one of those battles that feels either impossible or nearly impossible to win. It is less of a traditional boss fight and more of a desperate struggle for survival, with Samus being swarmed by wolf-like monsters in the middle of a blizzard. Just when it seems like it is about to be game over, Reger arrives and shoots down the creatures, giving Samus a chance to find shelter and safety.

The two then meet face-to-face and exchange a bit of story dialogue. He fights alongside Samus for a short time, but I do not remember him accompanying her through most of that section of the game. That is very different from the allies who join her later in the story.

He shows up again in the final area before you obtain the last key needed to begin the endgame. There, he leads a defensive line against a massive wave of monsters that threatens to overwhelm Samus and the others. At one point, the game strongly implies that he heroically falls in battle and dies. However, when you return later, it turns out to be one of those classic “just kidding” moments, and he is still alive.

Ironically, something similar happens again near the end of the game, only this time the situation is much more serious. Reger helps you fight Sylux during the final battle, although his contribution is fairly limited since he is controlled by the game’s AI. In the final cutscene, he and the rest of the allied characters stay behind so that Samus Aran can escape and continue her mission. I hope Nintendo brings him back in a future Metroid Prime game, even if it is only for a brief appearance in a cutscene. By the end of the story, I was surprisingly attached to the supporting cast, and I really hope Sylux did not end up killing Reger and the rest of the crew.
