Things I Like: Ugly Betty (TV Series) Season 3

Ugly Betty is a TV series my wife and I started not terribly long ago, and she’s quite determined to binge-watch it as best as we can with the kids taking over the TV sometimes. America Ferrera’s first major hit has been a favorite for both of us, and season 3 is pretty good at the very least.

Taking place after the second season, not much has changed for Betty besides part of her love life, where all the relationships and drama from the first two seasons that connected directly toward her have pretty much fizzled out. That doesn’t mean romance is not on the table. Things do change for Mode magazine as she eventually gets into the YETI program, which paves the way for her obviously becoming an editor for Mode or any other magazine rather than just being an assistant for Daniel.

Season 3 actually starts off with a surprise guest, Lindsay Lohan, who joined the show probably right before her career hit that gigantic nosedive. She plays an ex-enemy of Betty, and the story didn’t quite go the way I thought it would. I kind of wonder if she was just meant to be a Band-Aid type replacement for Rebecca Romijn leaving the show due to having problems with the script and the direction of her character.

I would say probably the most impressive thing about the entire season is the growth of Daniel Meade as a person. He is hands down no longer the naive and party-loving womanizer he once was. With his sister Alexis out of the picture, he has to do a lot of growing up, especially since he no longer has to depend on his father making the decisions for him after his father passed away in season 2.

I’ll say probably the worst part of the entire Ugly Betty series is the Wilhelmina Slater problem. She’s an entirely great villain, and Vanessa Williams plays her absolutely beautifully, but the writers keep writing her into a corner. She should have been fired and gotten rid of long ago, but they keep finding another way to keep her in the story and on camera. She’s like an annoying cockroach or mouse you just can’t exterminate no matter how hard you try, which by the end of season 3 starts being more annoying than clever.

But overall, my wife and I enjoyed season 3, but it’s definitely a step down from the first two seasons, especially compared to the original. We’ve actually started season 4, and by the time I was able to publish this, we’re probably already halfway through it. My wife is not always committed to a TV series like I am, but she’s very confident that Betty will get an ugly duckling-style makeover at the very end, and she’s so excited to see it. I think it’s kind of hilarious because I know my wife knows exactly who America Ferrera is and knows exactly what she looks like from multiple movies and TV shows such as Superstore and the Barbie movie.

  1. I forgot about Lohan being in this one. I think Britney Spears made an appearance at some point too, if I’m not mistaken.
