I’ve had a crush on Amy Adams since the early 2010s, and I was certainly fine with her being cast as Lois Lane in the DCEU after Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, hit theaters. While I do enjoy her performance in the role, she wasn’t quite the ideal Lois Lane.

One key reason is that she kept her red hair. Lois Lane is traditionally depicted with dark brown or black hair. Although race swapping remains a highly debated topic in media these days, there’s some validity to the notion that characters should embody the essence of who they’re meant to be. That said, Laurence Fishburne came across as a strong match for Perry White, who is usually Caucasian. Even though it wasn’t a race swap, choosing Amy Adams as Lois Lane required comic book nerds to accept her as Amy Adams portraying Lois. At times, she came off more like Amy Adams than the actual character.

That being said, she stays mostly faithful to the role as a dedicated journalist at the Daily Planet and as Superman’s romantic interest. And like most other versions of Lois Lane in DC Comics adaptations, she often finds herself in real peril, such as falling into the hands of the villainous Lex Luthor, who sports too much hair here and looks remarkably like the annoying guy from the Facebook movie.

Despite being intended for a substantial run in the DCEU, she only shows up in three films, or four if you treat Zack Snyder’s Justice League as its own separate movie. To be honest, I don’t recall much of her role in Justice League, but I do remember her intervening to prevent Batman from killing Superman right after Superman starts yelling the name “Martha.”

She shared excellent chemistry with Henry Cavill. It probably doesn’t hurt that he’s one of the most attractive men in Hollywood and she’s one of the most stunning women on the big screen. But with the DCEU implosion and Henry Cavill stepping away from Superman for a hiatus, we never really received a truly fulfilling ending for the pair.
