One of the first bosses of the game, I’d say Whomp King is the most memorable. A giant rock creature is not an easy foe for Mario alone.

Well.. maybe he is rather easy to defeat. It’s not too hard to dodge when he falls over and then stomp on his reverse side enough times to defeat him.

And you get a star too, good for Mario!
