I have seen bits and pieces of The Golden Girls over the years, but I actually finished the whole series from start to end just recently, thanks to Hulu.

The show came out about 3 years before I was even born. Which is to show how old Betty White was. A television program about old ladies living in Miami, Florida and Betty White lived almost 4 decades after that.

The best character by far is Sophia Petrillo who is played by Estelle Getty. The oldest character in the series, but definitely the one with the sharpest mind and the character with the best one-liners and comebacks.

Her daughter Dorothy could easily be called the main character of the show even though it definitely doesn’t have one. While I like Dorothy, it was hard to take her romantic plots seriously. While Bea Arthur was a very talented lady, in the 1980s and 1990s she was definitely one of the most unattractive women I can think of.

Romance in the bedroom is a common plotline throughout the whole series. And most of that revolves around Blanche Devereaux, the youngest of the Golden Girls and the only one I would slightly consider even remotely attractive for a potential suitor that wasn’t super old. Betty White actually originally auditioned for Blanche instead of Rose and I just couldn’t see her playing the same character as Rue McClanahan.

Betty White is adorable as Rose Nylund, the absolutely dimwitted woman from St. Olaf, Minnesota. I’ve been watching Betty White’s later series, Hot in Cleveland and her character Elka is so much different from Rose.

Golden Girls isn’t the perfect television sitcom. I think its major flaw is none of the stories have very permanent changes. No matter how in love one character is with a new boyfriend, something always happens to end their relationship. The only other cast member to stay the whole series (that I can think of) is Dorothy’s pathetic ex-husband Stan.

It definitely earns its place as one of television’s best and most beloved series. But their last season definitely dragged, and I can definitely see why Bea Arthur did not want to continue the show with its sequel The Golden Palace, which only lasted a single season.
I always enjoyed this series. Dorothy, of course, was my fave.
