Things I Like: Guru (Dragon Ball Z)

Guru in Dragon Ball Z anime Japan Namek Saga

Guru is a notable character from the Namek Saga in the anime Dragon Ball Z. He’s essentially the father of the remaining Namekians on Planet Namek, as there was a natural purge that wiped out nearly everyone except him and Kami/Piccolo.

He’s definitely much older than Kami, and I’m pretty sure he mentioned knowing Kami’s father before things got really bad on Namek. By the time we meet him, Guru is gigantic, round, and fairly obese—despite the fact that Namekians don’t really eat food and mostly survive by drinking water.

One of the coolest things Guru does is unlock the hidden potential of both Gohan and Krillin, giving them a significant power boost. Thanks to him, they’re able to make a real difference—without actually having to do much themselves, which is honestly pretty funny.

Guru also has a close call with Frieza, who comes looking for answers about the Dragon Balls. If it weren’t for Nail protecting him, Guru probably would have been killed before any wishes were granted.

Eventually, Guru dies of a broken heart before the third wish is made, but he’s later revived by Shenron, since his death technically counts as one of Frieza’s victims. After that, Guru and the other surviving Namekians are transported to Earth, where he passes away again—this time simply from old age. I definitely didn’t expect that as a kid, but it is what it is. At least Guru was able to find peace in his final moments.
