Things I Like: Vegito (Dragon Ball Z)

Vegito is one of my favorite characters in the Dragon Ball Z anime because he was the unexpected fusion of Goku and Vegeta, resulting in an incredibly powerful, smug, and visually striking warrior when their bodies merged into one. His name is a little confusing because it isn’t a perfect blend of Goku and Vegeta. It was supposed to be a fusion of Kakarot and Vegeta, but due to how Japanese phonetics work, it was translated in an odd way. I believe the most accurate version of his name would have been “Vegirot,” though admittedly that sounds rather stupid.

They fused out of necessity when Super Buu had absorbed all of their friends, leaving them with no other choice. Even in his base form, Vegito proved to be incredibly strong.

Even with Gohan’s powers, Super Buu was furious when he saw Vegito transform into a Super Saiyan. The funny thing is, Vegito should have been capable to reach Super Saiyan 3, which likely would have allowed him to completely annihilate the ultimate version of Majin Buu with one attack.

What I love most is the sheer silliness and trash talk throughout the entire fight. It reminded me of everything that was best about Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z combined into one.

No matter what kind of tricks Super Buu tried (whether stolen powers or clever schemes) Vegito always managed to stay one step ahead.

Even being turned into candy worked in his favor. It was the only time his battle defense seemed to backfire, but it actually benefited him because he retained his consciousness and, more importantly, his strength. As a piece of candy, he became even harder to fight, and he’s the only character who Buu turned back into his normal form afterward.

Like many others, he eventually gets absorbed, but in Vegito’s case, it was intentional. He allowed himself to be absorbed so he could rescue his friends trapped inside Majin Buu’s body. Honestly, it was a risky gamble since he only assumed the plan would work if he maintained that small energy barrier.

When he finally drops the barrier, Goku and Vegeta defuse and return to their normal forms. Then Vegeta foolishly crushes the earring, preventing them from fusing again, which was disappointing. Dragon Ball Super later retcons this, explaining that the earrings only create a temporary fusion unless one of the users is a Kai. That retcon makes Vegeta’s decision look even dumber.
