Videl is one of the last protagonist characters introduced in the classic anime Dragon Ball Z. For a regular human, she makes a pretty big splash, especially as she ends up with Gohan at the very end.

I was shocked beyond belief when it was revealed that she was the daughter of Mr. Satan. Her very name is actually an anagram of “devil,” keeping in with the theme. But despite the personal faults of her father, neither of the two are actually evil. When we first really meet her, she’s a university student, which is a pretty big deal to everyone because of her family history.

She quickly takes notice of Gohan and isn’t overly surprised to learn how special he really is. They form a pretty cute bond, which starts with her wanting to learn how to fly from him. I can’t really blame her; pretty much everybody who watched Dragon Ball Z wishes they could fly like the heroes do.

I had nearly forgotten that ChiChi did not like her at all when they first met. But to be honest, it mirrors her and Goku’s path to love as well. I can’t remember exactly, but I think her realizing that her family was rich was the reason she flipped to liking Videl, not because she was excelling at martial arts.

While it does seem like Videl was at least stronger than her dad, or at least understood ki energy, her power level is probably weaker than most of the characters in the original Dragon Ball. During her first match in the World Martial Arts Tournament, she almost gets killed. It became a wake-up call for how strongly Gohan and Videl felt about each other though.

I thought it was kind of sweet how much she believed in Gohan being alive when everybody else told her that he was dead after his first skirmish with Majin Buu. And Super Buu gives her some respect when he realizes that she’s the daughter of Mr. Satan.

But not too much respect, because he doesn’t hesitate to eat her by turning her into candy along with the rest of the people on Dende’s Lookout. I always thought this was kind of messed up, even with Super Buu being mostly evil.

But she’s wished back along with all the other victims of Buu, which is literally the whole planet. She gets married to Gohan, gives birth to Pan, and becomes pretty much a shadow of the character she was. She went from a feisty martial artist to the most boring housewife you’ve ever seen. Everybody complains about Gohan’s slide into mediocrity, but hers was like 10 times worse.
Do you actually watch this on television, Adam? This is a whole world I don’t know. Your write up was intriguing. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
