Things I Like: Gregory (Dragon Ball Z)

Gregory is a minor but notable character in the classic anime Dragon Ball Z. He is one of only two companions of King Kai. the other being Bubbles, a monkey who doesn’t talk and isn’t particularly intelligent. Both the cricket and the monkey live in a world supposedly reserved for the divine, a plot point I don’t think Akira Toriyama thought through very carefully.

The majority of his role occurs while Goku is training on King Kai’s planet. Gregory’s purpose is to avoid being hit by Goku’s mallet, serving as a test of Kakarot’s worthiness.

This proves to be a significant challenge, as Gregory can fly and is quite quick.

Eventually, Goku uses the old technique of tricking someone by going the opposite direction and cutting them off. Oddly enough, the celestial space cricket seems to just hover awkwardly for a moment instead of actively trying to dodge, making his defeat feel a little convenient. Perhaps he was simply tired of flying around and decided to let Goku win.

Sadly, along with King Kai and Bubbles, he dies when Goku is forced to bring the exploding Cell to their planet in order to spare Earth. Afterward, all that really changes is that they have halos above their heads. I’m pretty sure they were wished back with the Dragon Balls in the manga, but in the anime, they technically remain dead, though it makes little practical difference in the afterlife.
