Things I Like: Master Roshi (Dragon Ball Z)

Master Roshi is one of the most notable characters in Dragon Ball Z, even though he doesn’t actually do much throughout the series. Canonically, he’s much weaker than even King Piccolo, and by the time Raditz shows up, he’s completely outclassed in terms of strength and skill. Still, he remains a lovable supporting character as Goku’s former martial arts master.

He also kind of serves as a lazy guru figure for the other characters. In reality, though, he mostly just relaxes on his island. I’m pretty sure Krillin lives there for the majority of the series as well.

He’s still the same old man we know, and the same pervert he’s always been. In Dragon Ball Z, however, he has far fewer opportunities to act on that. All I really remember is him being inappropriate with Bulma, Chi-Chi, and I think even Android 18, who is obviously far more dangerous than the first two.

I’m pretty sure he’s the one who makes the wish to bring Goku back to life after he dies fighting Raditz. That might be his biggest achievement in the series, even though technically anyone else could have done it.

In the original Dragon Ball anime, he dies fighting King Piccolo while trying to trap him with the Evil Containment Wave. In Dragon Ball Z, he’s one of the many who are eaten by Super Buu after Buu escapes the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. It’s a shame, but he doesn’t stay dead for long. In terms of actual literal time, they were only gone briefly. We also tend to forget that he has immortality, so he’ll eventually outlive everyone else.
