Things I Like: Android 18 (Dragon Ball Z)

Android 18 in Dragon Ball Z anime Majin Buu Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

Android 18 is one of the most notable characters introduced fairly late in the series. Because of her physical beauty, she quickly became a fan favorite, especially among the thirstier fans. Dragon Ball Z didn’t really lean into “sexy” female characters the way some other anime did. I didn’t really share this opinion.

Android 18 flirting with Krillin in Dragon Ball Z anime Cell Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

We find out that she and her brother, Android 17, are the androids who terrorized Future Trunks’ timeline. But when they arrive in the present timeline, she doesn’t actually seem that evil. The worst thing I can remember her doing is breaking Vegeta’s arm, and honestly, he was kind of asking for it with all the “dad joke” robot puns.

Android 18 vs Semi perfect Cell in Dragon Ball Z anime Cell Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

What’s wild is that she was stronger than Frieza by a large margin, and even more powerful than Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan Trunks, and Super Saiyan Vegeta at the time. But that incredible power eventually gets overshadowed when Cell enters the picture. I still can’t believe how much she just stood there while he was trying to absorb her. Even when she actually attacked him, it didn’t seem to do anything, almost like Krillin’s attacks.

Android 18 spat out from Perfect Cell in Dragon Ball Z anime Cell Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

One of the most surprising moments of the Cell Games Saga was when Cell spit her back out after Gohan hit him hard in the stomach. I was always curious whether Gohan could have forced Android 17 out as well, but that never happened.

Android 18 holding daughter Marron on the Lookout in Dragon Ball Z anime Majin Buu Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

While we weren’t too surprised that she eventually married Krillin, I think a lot of fans were shocked when they had a child together. In Japanese, the term used isn’t quite the same as “android” in the English dub, so she’s technically more of a cyborg, a human enhanced with robotic technology.

Death of Android 18 by Super Buu candy ray in Dragon Ball Z anime Majin Buu Saga Japan Akira Toriyama

Since almost everyone ends up dying at least once by the end of Dragon Ball Z, her time comes too, along with her daughter Marron, when Majin Buu turns them into candy. That’s one of the moments I really hate. It feels like something out of a horror movie and probably should have happened offscreen, just implied rather than shown.
