Things I Hate: Dr. Wheelo (Dragon Ball Z)

Dr. Wheelo is the main antagonist of the Dragon Ball Z: The World’s Strongest movie, which was one of the earliest films released in the Dragon Ball series. While he has a decent fan base within the fandom, I honestly found him pretty forgettable and far from the best of the non-canon movie villains.

Master Roshi and Krillin look up in shock and scale at the base of Dr. Wheelo's enormous mechanical leg. The dark, metallic structure towers over them against a deep blue background. Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest

For one thing, he does not even have a real body of his own. His gigantic brain is preserved inside a massive mechanical robot instead. His ultimate goal is to steal the body of the strongest person in the world, and he initially assumes that person is Master Roshi. Eventually, though, he learns about Goku.

Piccolo, seen from behind wearing his iconic purple gi and blue obi, stands defiantly before the massive, dark silhouette of Dr. Wheelo’s giant robotic body in a dimly lit cave.Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest

Dr. Wheelo also becomes absurdly powerful almost out of nowhere. He easily overwhelms Master Roshi and Krillin, and he even swats Piccolo away like a fly. For a scientist and tech genius, that is pretty impressive.

Goku, surrounded by a fierce red Kaio-ken aura, prepares to attack the shadowy, towering form of Dr. Wheelo. Rocks and dust hover in the air around Goku from the intensity of his power. Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest

Then, of course, it falls to Goku to do the heavy lifting against the doctor. And because Dr. Wheelo is the main antagonist of the movie, Goku struggles far more against him than he realistically probably should.

A massive, blinding white and blue energy beam erupts upward, causing debris and rocks to fly through the air as the surrounding environment is consumed by the power of the blast Dr. Wheelo Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest

In the end, it is technically the Spirit Bomb that finishes him off. As villains go, he was a decent first attempt for one of the movies, but the series definitely improved with later film antagonists. It is also kind of funny that almost none of the old Dragon Ball Z movies make much sense within the actual timeline of the show. Based on the power levels, transformations, and events happening in the main series, most of these films could not realistically happen at all.
