My wife and I needed something new to watch, so we stumbled upon Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix. I figured it was connected to the Vikings show that originated on the History Channel and I was right.

The show is set during the last century of the Viking age. The English crown decides to do something despicable to the Viking people living peacefully in England. And they don’t see the act of genocide coming.

The Vikings living in Scandinavia learn of this and are absolutely furious. King Cnut of Denmark leads all Viking people to get revenge in the Saxon ruled England.

Their greatest allies are a set of people from the rather new settlement of Greenland. Leif Erikson, his sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir, and their friends will prove themselves quite useful.

The show also details a great period of strife for the people of Scandinavia. Christianity is starting to become the dominant religion and for pagans, jarls like Olaf Haraldsson will make them second class citizens.

But Jarl Kåre is a million times worse. I’ll admit, he’s a pretty terrifying villain. He might be a follower of Jesus Christ… but this guy acts more like the religion’s devil.

I really enjoyed King Cnut and Leif Erikson but I also really liked Emma of Normandy. She was a very powerful and intelligent queen in history and that proves true in Vikings: Valhalla as well.

We both were fans of the season and it’s pretty short. But it’s got its history mostly accurate, and most episodes rarely have boring moments. Netflix definitely did well with this new program.
Both my husband and I really like this series! We have watched every episode through to season 4. There is a supposed to be a season 5 and a season 6 but they’re not on Netflix yet.
Ooops, this should have been written on the Vikings series! That’s the one that has six seasons.
